How to describe your language ability

Speaking multiple challenges has many benefits for all individuals. Firstly, it is a great addition to the CV of each and every one of us. Additionally, multilingual individuals have improved memory, can multitask, are better at problem-solving and have enhanced critical-thinking skills.

The “Common European Framework of Reference for Languages” (CEFR) is an internationally recognized standard that describes your learning progress with more useful information. This framework aids each individual to describe their level of fluency starting from A1 (Absolute Beginner) and ending with C1 (Advanced).

Thus, if an employer asks you to describe your language abilities objectively during an interview, you can use the CEFR, since it is a recognized international standard that can describe language abilities.

Keep in mind that there are various ways of bettering your language skills, and there is always room for improvement. For instance, if you would like to improve your English, you can do so, by watching tv-shows and series with subtitles in your own language or listening to music and reading the lyrics. However, the best way to learn a language is to be in an environment where the language is constantly being spoken. This will as a result not give you another choice than immersing yourself in that language.
